What to do
Wine knowledge
Travelling in this DOC area, which is a microcosm, has the exclusive flavour and the slow rhythm of the tasting of fine wines perhaps because it is an intelligent way in which to penetrate and get to know a reality which is just as extraordinary as it is reserved. The wine, the cypress trees, the parish churches and the castles, all immersed in a land covered by thick woods and vineyards.
Baths
The area presents the largest number of thermal springs in Italy, appreciated and famous since the ancient times. Etruscans and Romans enjoyed the benefits from this priceless gift which today still surges from the Earth's depths. Chianciano, Bagno Vignoni, S. Casciano and the very near Petriolo are ready to welcome you.
History
The area is covered with vestiges of the ancient splendour of the Sienese Republic and the struggles for domination in the region against the close and powerful Florence. Castles, fortified hamlets, abbeys and majestic ruins are stops to make on deeply alluring itineraries going through millenary history which spans from the Etruscans right up to our times, passing through the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
Nature
A land made of large spaces and intimate whispers, for those who really love living the place, discovering authentic lands hearing the murmurs of Mother Nature, the area which holds the basins of the rivers Farma and Merse represents a destination not to be missed, amongst the slopes of the Mount Amiata and the valleys of the river Ombrone, amongst thick woods and Mediterranean flora, ruins and medieval castles.
Trekking
Discover the beauty of our lands on foot, along paths or country tracks, where it is possible to discover torrents, ruins, thermal springs just by going for a walk. From a wood to a vineyard, from an ancient olive grove to an abbey in ruins, it is possible to stop for pleasant rests under the shadow of giant oaks or under ancient medieval bridges.
Folklore
The great feasts of Christian tradition and of the local patron saints, the farming and share-cropping feasts, which celebrate the passing of the seasons, the farm animals and the products of the earth. The ancient games, the fairs, the festivals, the historical commemorations.

Going along the country tracks of the Sienese countryside on horseback is a unique experience. Upon the crests of the hills, amongst the vineyards and the fields, itineraries unwind joining small fortified hamlets, abbeys and castles.
Museums
Siena is one of the most beautiful Italian art cities, still faithful to its medieval character since the years of the splendour of the glorious Republic. Enclosed in the geometries of Piazza del Campo, in the majestic dimensions of the Duomo, in the small narrow streets of the contradas is the enchantment of a very ancient equilibrium between man and city. |
